A Labor Of Love...

Alessandra's Nursery

Finally!

I'm glad to report that mommy and daddy finished my room. They're a bit out there, but I'm pleased with the overall result. Their idea was to make a cartoonish landscape and fill it with small stuffed animals (because they figured animals would be too hard to paint).

In the end it turned out to be a bit more work than originally planned, but I think I deserve that sort of commitment. Mommy took some painting classes to prepare for some of the art work. You'll notice the trees in the pictures below; they're much inspired by her classes. She had taken some sowing classes earlier, and she put those to good use by making some of my bedding items (bumper, skirt).

Daddy got to use his power tools to make the little shelves on which he placed the beanie babies (and other little animals). He also painted the sky and did a good job with the sun. However, mommy did the more detailed work. She's a girl like me, you know. We're better at the fine stuff.

Oh, and here is a QuickTime movie that daddy put together: It's a big file (4+MB), but it's cute.

Happy Sky
In the beginning I plan to just lay on my back in the crib. So it's nice to be able to look at something happier than a plain white ceiling. So daddy remembered his geometry classes and made a nice sun around the ceiling light (which has a dimmer so I don't get blinded every time). Of course, in the very beginning I won't actually be in that room. Instead, I'll entertain mom and dad in their room at night.

The Farm
Mom and dad painted four “habitats” in my room. The first is a farm. It's got a barn and some animals. If you look closely, you might be able to see that mommy painted some bees and a butterfly too. My favorite are the horsies though...

The Savannah
The second habitat has some pretty cool animals in it. However, it's a bit embarassing to see mom and dad mix a koala, a tiger and an elephant. Even I know that they don't all live in Africa.

Still, mom painted a mighty fine Acacia tree, and that koala bear looks cute in it even though it doesn't belong there ecologically speaking. The parrot in the inset is a little higher on the wall.

The Forest
I think this habitat is supposed to show a North American forest. It's pretty nice too. Some of the animals in this one were given to me by Charlie, Matt, and Caroline Long. I think that is awfully nice of them.

My favorite here are the duckies. They look a little goofy: They remind me of mom and dad.

Our Home
Finally, there is a habitat that looks like our home. Mommy painted this when I was a big girl in her tummy already. It took a long time, and she had a (physically) hard time with it. But the end result it very nice.

There is also the cutest kittie in this habitat, but you cannot see it in this picture. Check out the movie to see it. Auntie Gail gave me that kittie: She's also awfully nice.

Mommy made the curtains all by herself and you can see a little of them in this picture. They match some of my bed linens. Yes I know: I'm a very classy girl. What can I say? I'll be born that way.
